Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left, the Ford family was taken care of by her mom, grandmother, and godparents. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford's passion for acting started in her early years. Ford joined the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she concluded that this school wasn't for her. Ford rather applied to the Central School of Speech and Drama and was able to secure the position on her 4th attempt. Shaun Dingwall played Pete Tyler on Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in a 1992 episode of Surgical Spirit. She adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate appeared in programs on television including The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. She worked on stage regularly, and joined the company's 2000-2001 season. But Tate was soon gaining attention for her stand-up comic that she incorporated into her show in 1996.
